When done elegantly, transitions from one state to the next imparts a satisfying feeling of accomplishment. This pushes the static visual concept of elegance (think ikebana) into the richness of the time dimension (think Fred Astaire).

Something as mundane as shopping carts and credit cards would benefit from this kind of elegance.

The work of designing good transition patterns is an under represented area in UI design.
