Well, I need a license of some sort because I want others to be able to legally use it. And of course it is copyrighted, that's a given. The MIT or GNU licenses also honor me as the copyright holder.

As for maintaining and forking, yes, these need to be spelled out. That's what I'm suggesting. Isn't it time to reexamine GNU and MIT and come up with another well-thought-out license that can accommodate other needs?

In particular, I want to have the source code visible to other programmers, but I don't want to grant unfettered access. I don't want others to take parts it (or the whole thing) and do whatever they please. I want to assert my ownership rights to restrict what can be done with it. GNU and MIT are too liberal in giving away all my ownership rights. It's a free ride for anyone to profit off my hard work.
