The corollary to the unsexy problem problem is the "if you build it, they will come" mantra that is so deeply embedded in the software world.

Programmers and their usability and design counterparts all love to build novel solutions to problems that don't exist. Following your naming pattern, I might call this the "solutionless solution".

What problem does virtual reality solve? Or for that matter, what problem does artifical intelligence solve? Or cryptocurrency? Or big-data mining?

There are so many worthy problems waiting to be worked on.

As you suggest, we need interdisciplinary teams with cheerleaders urging us on: titillating, arousing, exciting our senses with gleaming visions of the ordinary but necessary elements of life.
