Kanji is great, but the whole on'yomi / kun'yomi mess, just ruins it.

To make matters worse, every kanji character has at least 2 pronunciations, one based on the native Japanese word and another based on old Chinese. Common characters like 生 can have up to 20 different pronunciations. What a mess!
