I like how yōkai reflect the worries and stress we face in our lives. Shinto's myriad of gods 八百万の神 yaoyorozu no kami, also fits into this category.

Incidentally, the reason October (kannazuki) has no gods, is because they've all gone to Izumo in Shimane for their annual gathering!

For fans of yōkai a visit to Sakaiminato in Tottori is sure to please. The main street leading from the train station is called Mizuki Shigeru Road. It has numerous yōkai sculptures every few steps. At the end of the road, is a museum housing the works of the famous manga artist Mizuki Shigeru.
